Target product profiles for animal plasma-derived antivenoms

antivenoms for treatment of snakebite envenoming in sub-Saharan Africa

World Health Organization

Medical / Tropical Medicine

Snakebite envenoming is an NTD responsible for an estimated 81,000-138,000 deaths and 400,000 victims of disabilities, globally every year. It affects poor rural populations in tropical/sub-tropical Africa, Asia, and Latin America. WHO added snakebite envenoming to the portfolio of NTDs in 2017 (WHA71.5). Snakebite envenoming is treatable but access to quality assured therapeutic products such as antivenoms is extremely limited. To support countries to improve access to safe, effective, and affordable treatments for the treatment of Snakebite Envenoming WHO is developing a series of target product profiles (TPPS) for snakebite therapeutics. This first set of TPPs focuses on animal plasma-derived antivenom products for the bites of sub-Saharan African venomous snakes, and is intended to provide guidance to manufacturers, ministries of health, regulatory authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders.
