Walter Camp

The Father of American Football

Harford Powell

Sports & Recreation / Baseball / Essays & Writings

Walter Camp: The Father of American Football, first published in 1926 is an inspirational look at the life of Walter Chauncey Camp (1859-1925), who restructured football from its rugby roots to the form familiar today. Camp's innovations included creating the scrimmage line, the 11-man team, signal-calling and the quarterback position; he also was the originator of the rule whereby a team had to give up the ball unless it had advanced a specified number of yards within a set number of downs. Included are four pages of photographs, an appendix listing players of All-America teams of the period, and information on Camp's series of 12 exercises known as the β€œDaily Dozen.”
