Raga and Yoga

Bhavana Pradyumna

Health & Fitness / Yoga

“Music and Yoga can be as integral as Music and Dance”. “Raga and Yoga” is a concept researched to explore the confluence of “the melody of the Raga with the Poise of the Yoga”. This book aims to open a new door to the readers, to understand the ancient works of Carnatic music and Yoga.

Yoga deals with the body, the mind, and a journey of self-realization, which purifies an individual by refining one-self layer by layer. Similarly, The Sruthi and the naada in ones vocal presentation or in one’s instrumental presentation, are perfected by refining it layer by layer with one's practice, exploration, journey of perfection, and purification. Both Raga and Yoga are like the mica layers which gets refined layer by layer.

The concept of Raga & Yoga germinated in the mind of the Author, Bhavana Pradyumna, through her own life experience. She further researched the concept, and has now developed it to a level where she is demonstrating the new possibilities to understand the age old traditions of India and its holistic approach to living.

For the first time, an attempt is made through this book to formally introduce the world to a whole new dimension of Study and research that delves into Indian classical music as an experiential system, which presented the scientific yogic concepts in a simplified way for a common man to experience, adopt, and follow.

This book seeks out how great composers had a yogic conscience which influenced their compositions. The book also provides insight into how the essence of "Patanjali Yoga Sutra (one or few of them together)" are expressed in different compositions across different Indian Languages.

The book is filled with beautiful illustrations. One can find the details of Yoga Chakras, and Sri Chakra. The relation between the Yoga Chakras, the Human body, and the Veena (one of the oldest traditional string instrument in the world), is beautifully illustrated as well. The relation between Yoga chakras (Main chakras as defined in Yoga) and Sri Chakra, with musical references are explained well.

Apart from all the explorative, and curious dimensions of Raga and Yoga presented in this book, it also provides practical basic yogic concepts, like Pranayama methods, vocal exercises and Postures, that are necessary for a Practicing Musician, to improve the overall dimensions of one’s performance.

Other publications of CCParis include “Children’s Carnatic”, a book series in multiple languages that uses simple story telling with beautiful illustrations, “Approach to Music, the Indian way”, a multi-level music book written to address the curious western musicians who want a window into Carnatic music. This book also provides a wonderful framework for teachers, practitioners to learn the art form. Years and years of experience is translated into one of the most practical guide to Carnatic music.
