When Mark Twain was a boy, there was but one permanent ambition among his comrades in the village on the west bank of the Mississippi River. That was, to be a steamboatman. There were transient ambitions of other sorts, but they were only transient. When a circus came and went, it left the boys burning to become clowns; the first negro minstrel show that came to that section left them all suffering to try that kind of life; now and then they had a hope that if they lived and were good, God would permit them to be pirates. These ambitions faded out, each in its turn; but the ambition to be a steamboatman always remained. ‘Old Times on the Mississippi’ is a collection of seven short stories, that appeared in the ‘Atlantic Monthly’ of the 1870s.
