भारत माँ के अमर सपूत लोकमान्य बाल गंगाधर तिलक समाज-सुधारक और स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के सर्वमान्य नेता थे। उन्होंने सबसे पहले पूर्ण स्वराज की माँग उठाई। उनका कथन ‘स्वराज मेरा जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार है और मैं इसे लेकर रहूँगा’ ने स्वाधीनता सेनानियों में नया जोश भर दिया।
तिलक भारतीय राष्‍ट्रीय कांग्रेस में शामिल हुए। सन् 1907 में कांग्रेस गरम दल और नरम दल में विभाजित हो गई। गरम दल में तिलक के साथ लाला लाजपत राय और बिपिनचंद्र पाल शामिल थे। सन् 1908 में तिलक ने क्रांतिकारी प्रफुल्ल चाकी और खुदीराम बोस के बम हमले का समर्थन किया; जिसके कारण ब्रिटिश सरकार ने उन्हें बर्मा की मांडले जेल में भेज दिया।
वे बाल विवाह और अन्य सामाजिक कुरीतियों के प्रबल विरोधी थे। उन्होंने हिंदी को संपूर्ण भारत की भाषा बनाने पर जोर दिया। महाराष्‍ट्र में उन्होंने स्वराज का संदेश पहुँचाने के लिए गणेशोत्सव की परंपरा प्रारंभ की। मराठी में ‘मराठा दर्पण’ व ‘केसरी’ नाम से दो दैनिक समाचार-पत्र प्रारंभ किए।

1 अगस्त; 1920 को बंबई में उनका देहावसान हो गया। श्रद्धांजलि देते हुए महात्मा गांधी ने उन्हें ‘आधुनिक भारत का निर्माता’ कहा और पं. जवाहरलाल नेहरू ने उन्हें ‘भारतीय क्रांति का जनक’ बतलाया। उन्होंने अनेक पुस्तकें लिखीं; किंतु मांडले जेल में उनके द्वारा लिखी गई ‘श्रीमद‍्भगवद‍्गीता’ की व्याख्या ‘गीता-रहस्य’ सर्वोत्कृष्‍ट कृति है; जिसका कई भाषाओं में अनुवाद हुआ है।
