Savage (1841-1918), a noted Unitarian minister in Boston, was one of the leading architects of Unitarian thought. (He is mentioned in the autobiography of Booker T. Washington, as they both received honorary degrees from Harvard at the same ceremony, as did Alexander Graham Bell.) He helped reconcile Protestant belief vs. Science in regard to Darwinian Theory; and, also, was interested in possibility of a future life. He was a member of the [London] Society for Psychical Research; other members included: S. P. Langley, Sir William Crookes, James Hyslop, and William James. The work was later carried on by Duke University Parapsychological Laboratory.
