Jonas Salk was born in 1914 in New York City. He is best known for developing the first successful vaccine for polio. He also made significant contributions to our understanding of influenza and other infectious diseases. Salk has been honored with many awards, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. This biography chronicles the terror and effects of the polio epidemic throughout the world, the role FDR played in fighting the disease, the mass field trials of the polio pioneers, and the struggle in the scientific community between the theories of Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin. Salk established the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California in 1963; he was the director there until his death in 1995.
