A Story of Family

Peter Mercurio

Biography & Autobiography / General

WE FOUND OUR SON IN THE SUBWAY—The extraordinary, touching story of how Peter Mercurio’s partner, Danny, found an abandoned newborn in a New York City subway station, and how together they adopt the baby and become a family.

If I hadn’t glanced back it never would have happened. I was exiting the station and as I pushed through the turnstile, I noticed something on the ground to my left, behind the bars in the corner. It looked like the legs of a doll sticking out of a black hoodie. I wondered why someone would leave a doll there. It looked so lifelike. I kept going and about halfway up the stairs I glanced back. And that's when the legs moved. My heart pounded. I jumped back down. When I got close, I realized it wasn't a doll at all, but a real baby.

It was a mild summer night in 2000, I was waiting for Danny to come home when he called, frantically explaining how he had just found a baby in the subway station. I sprinted over to meet him and saw the newborn for the first time. A chill pulsed up my spine. Who could leave a baby like this? I immediately felt that the newborn boy's life would now be inextricably linked to Danny, but I never imagined that we would be the ones to adopt him. We were two men unprepared for parenthood, but given this unique opportunity, we gathered the strength and support from our friends and family to welcome a precious newborn into our home, and love him with all our hearts, for the rest of our lives.

Few people experience phenomena or emergency situations—like a lightning strike or a plane crash—and when these shocking events don’t end in tragedy, we say it must be fate or destiny or simply a miracle. Finding this child, our son Kevin, was just such a miracle. He changed our lives forever. This is our story of believing in miracles, the challenges and joy of parenthood, and finding love in unexpected places.
