Cyber Operations
A Case Study Approach
Jerry M. Couretas
The rapidly developing field of cyber systems has yet to benefit from the structured analysis that more formal technical disciplines use to guide their fields of practice. This lack of comprehensive understanding results in a challenge when describing a βcyber problem,β much less in determining a technical, process or policy countermeasure1 that remedies the situation. Therefore, framing cyber analysis, first as a conceptual model, based on well-known operations that span from media (e.g., 2016 US Presidential Campaign) to suspected critical infrastructure threats (e.g., Dragonfly Campaign2), is an important analytical problem that this book will approach through subject matter interviews, case studies (e.g., Ukrainian Power Loss3) and modeled examples that provide the reader with an approach for framing the problem, developing metrics and proposing realistic courses of action. This is especially important as the market moves toward the development of an "Internet of Things," increasing both connectedness and cyber security challenges. This book will therefore develop a comprehensive view of cyber operations, analysis and targeting that includes operational examples viewed through a lens of conceptual models provided in current technical and policy literature. This book provides practical insight for both cyber defenders as well as cyber operations planners and provides real-world case studies to illuminate the methodologies that are introduced.
