As a boy, David meets an interesting woman, Pearl, through his grandmother, Pauline. Pearl is a middle-aged Creole woman with a little dog who comes in and out of David's life the rest of his life. Pearl is a strong woman with strong convictions of what is right and wrong for David, and she seems to appear and vanish as fast as she has come into his life.
David is smitten with Pearl and has so many questions when she is around. Questions that Pearl is reluctant to give David the answers to until she deems it the time to be right to answer them. It seems to David that everyone knows but him what is going on, and he is right; they do.
David has some hardships through his life that also aid in molding his life and his thinking, but Pearl is driven to keep him on the right path.
The older he gets, the more she tells him until she opens up her life to him, as odd as it is, until David knows what his future is, and he takes control and makes his mark on the world.
